Matthew 28; Mark 16

I find it weird to finish a book.  Like I don’t want it to end, but excited to see what is next at the same time.

Matthew 28.  Let me ask you…before today if I said “what is the Great Commission” could you honestly tell me what it was.  If you could, Kudos to you…I could not!  Those who forget easily…here is how you can remember this…that is the GREAT (co) MISSION!!!!  To GO…and Witness.

Do you realize the FIRST thing Jesus wants us to hear after the Resurrection is “GO!!”.  Let’s put this in perspective.  He had been teaching them HIS WAYS this whole time.  Why?  SO THEY CAN BE USED.  Listen to me…Listen to me…not on their own accord but on the Spirit.

So now that you have read the Gospel or even the Bible…what does Jesus say  “GO!!!” and don’t you dare say “I can’t because…..” because if you say that then you are taking any credit of self and not Spirit.

Ok…I am done. (for now).  So we read the Great Commission and the Apostles (right now 11….trust me there will be a replacement for Judas…we need the 12 count back).

Let’s go over to Mark 16 and close out that book (without me preaching this time)

Let’s get two topics out of the way.  First, Baptism.  Mark 16:16 “Whoever believes and is Baptized will be saved”.  Does this insinuate that if you believe and are not Baptized that you will not be saved.  No.

The original grammar of the text is written in a Cause and Effect way.  Example: If you touch the fire and are burned…

If you are Believer you will be baptized.  To say it is required would first, contradict everything Jesus has taught us so far and more importantly it would impart SOME of Salvation onto OUR part and that just takes half of Jesus off the Cross.  I don’t worship a half of Jesus.  Notice the last Words Jesus said yesterday.  “It is Finished!!!”  The Greek word means “It is Accomplished”.  He did not say “It is finished after I do this and you baptize yourself”.  His death conquered our death and it His purposed was FULLY ACCOMPLISHED.

The last thing I want to talk about (minor compared to what I just went on and on about) is the 5 signs of the ones who believe.

In my name they will

  1. Drive out demons
  2. They will speak in New Languages
  3. Pick up Snakes
  4. Drink deadly drink and not be harmed
  5. Lay hands and be healed

Now as much fun as I like to have with my family and friends who think my Christianity is a Cult.  (I attend a Baptist Church…and to my lost family yes they think it is a cult) I do like to tell them my church does all 5 of these on Sunday…but the reality is, Jesus was talking to the APOSTLES.  The Scriptures JUST got done saying NOT ALL THE APOSTLES WERE YET BELIEVERS.  So if they became believers they would GO and do the Great Commission and a SIGN to them would be the gift of these 5 things.

Guess what?

All 5 get fulfilled! (By the apostles…not my Baptist Pastor)

Well. I truly have a knot in my stomach.  What do write? I want to write about Love.   That is the ultimate reason for today’s reading. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17.

I first read Matthew.  Event though the Gospel is for ALL I did however take the authors background into account as I read it.  Anyway, I am going to just pull out a few bullets of interest today.  otherwise I am sure the reading will be familiar without them.

First, they handed him to Pilot.  Why? He was the Roman Governor in Judea.  The ruling council of the Sanhedrin could not carry out the death penalty.  Only the Roman emperor could.  However, blasphemy was not punishable under Roman Law (it was  a Jewish Law) sooooo NOTICE that they change the charge in front of Pilot.  They NOW accuse Jesus of calling himself KING of the Jews (not the Son of God) .  This on the other hand,  was a direct threat to Caesar and would be punishable. (if it were a true accusation).

Know that  I am trying to keep this short,  but if you dig into the Old Testament you would see prophetic scriptures being fulfilled with each action…from Isaiah to Zechariah. I am however going to take a minute to discuss Barabbas.  Completely fascinating.  It was a tradition on the Day of the Feast to free a criminal.  Pilot could have easily released Jesus.  However, note that he “washed his hands clean of this mess” when he washed his hands in front of the crowd.  All the way back to Deuteronomy you may actually remember me commenting on this.

Then all the elders of the town nearest the body shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley, and they shall declare: “Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it done.  Accept this atonement for your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, O LORD, and do not hold your people guilty of the blood of an innocent man.” And the bloodshed will be atoned for.  So you will purge from yourselves the guilt of shedding innocent blood, since you have done what is right in the eyes of the LORD. ( Deut 21:6-9)

Pilot was declaring he would not charge Jesus guilty and left it up to the crowd.  Think about Barabbas.  Barabbas was Guilty and deserved to be on the cross.  We are Barabbas!  Jesus took his place.  Took our place!  The criminal was not set free that day, he was replaced!

Today’s read was not a first for me but what hit me today was this moment of Jesus is God but here is is truly man.  Truly.  He was so beat and so tired that a man from Cyrene that was probably visiting for the Passover was forced to help him carry that cross.  I just can’t take how much Jesus did that day.  Scriptures like (30) “Struck him in the head again and again…”  were moments of reality of ALL He took for me that day.

Maybe you grew up with images of this….

But truly it is an image of this…..

What makes it worse is that usually during a crucifixion the criminals were given a drink with gall to dull them to make the excruciating pain a bit less, and Jesus didn’t even do that…He took it ALL for us.

Jesus quoted Psalm 22 when in that moment He became the Sin and was separated from the Father!  (Stop here and flip back and read the words of David, read Psalm 22:1-5.

As Jesus called out the Hebrews thought he may be calling on Elijah to come save him.  Elijah was a prophet that was taken to Heaven without experiencing death.  Then finally when He GAVE UP His spirit what happened??  Death was conquered immediately! How do we know, even without the evidence of the resurecion…what is called the raising of the Saints to some.  Holy people, believers that had passed to death before the death of Jesus rose from the dead! (A Saint is a Believer)   Even the Roman guard (called a centurion) at that moment professed Jesus as Lord!.

For those who spent what felt like 6 months reading about the materials inside the Tabernacle in the days of Moses you will for certain remember that God was separated from the priests by a huge thick curtain.  At the moment when Jesus gave His life for us,  that curtain was torn (top to bottom, leaving NO room for gravity explanations or rationalization) allowing us direct access to the Lord through the death of Jesus!  (aren’t you glad I am trying to keep this short)

Please realize the GIFT you have today.  What was only accessible once a YEAR by One man…we can access everyday through one Savior, the new High Prist…our Lord Jesus Christ.  Please do not rush this read this weekend.  Take the time to go back to Isaiah 53…READ IT.  Note the fulfillment of each line, right down to the details of verse 53:9 relating to Matthew 27:59 when Joseph of Arimathea buried Jesus in a rich man’s tomb.

The reading is very clear today so I actually am just going to open it for questions or discussions.  Here are a few things I pulled out that were note worthy to me this time reading it.

  • Passover (and the Feast of Unleavened Bread)  The Feast took place all week, it celebrated the exodus from Egypt.  They left in such hurry that the bread did not have time to rise.  So now they commemorate this freedom with unleavened bread.   The Passover is the first night of the feast.  It was a night to remember the final plague that struck the Egyptians of the first-born child.  If the Hebrew families sacrificed a perfect lamb and put the blood on the doorpost, the angel of death would not come and kill their first-born.  He would Pass Over the house.  That is when they left Egypts slavery. (Exodus 12)
  • Judas Iscariot: he was a money lover wasn’t he.  We see that with the woman pouring the expensive perfume on Jesus’s feet.  He didn’t care about the poor…he thought about the money!  Anyway, 30 silver coins.  The same price it cost in Exodus to release a slave.  See the point.  It cost 30 shekels of silver to release our slavery to sin. (Exodus 21)
  • Also,  look at Zec 11:12, the Shepard that was paid a measly 30 silver coins, an insult for how much a shepherd does.  Here too, for Judas, turning our Messiah over for a measly 30 coins.
  • So here we see the Last Supper, some call it the Eucharist, and some communion.   All very fitting terms.  The Last Supper is the remembrance of the last Passover, Eucharist is a term of Thanks and Communion that is what we do with the Lord when we take it.  PLEASE remember WHY it is remembered. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
  • If you have not read the Old Testament, I urge you to.   The reason I say this is because we must fully understand the entire picture for our foundation of faith and to be able to properly bring the message forward to others.  Mt 26:54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”

For me the biggest thing that caught my eye was the trial process.  I remember when reading the law all the key points to a fair trial and I wish I had kept notes on it.  Jesus here is brought to 2 trials.   The first was the Sanhedrin.  See, the Hebrews (now called Jewish after the exile) were released and kind of left alone to rule their own government.  The Sanhedrin was the ruling council that would hear such civil cases.  Now,  as far as the death penalty goes,  they were not allowed to carry out the death penalty without the Roman’s Governor’s consent. (Hmmmm who is the Roman Governor, we have not met him yet but I am sure you know his name).  So the first trial which happened during the night (not supposed to occur after sundown).  You see Mark 14:57 (read it closely!) the chief priests and the Sanhedrin looking for false evidence against Jesus SO THAT they could bring him in front of the Romans.  Well 2 men came forward and declared that Jesus said “ I WILL destroy this man made temple and in three days will build another”  DID HE SAY THAT??  NO!  Go back…

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” John 2:19

The evidence was false.  He was speaking of Himself as the temple.  He never said He would destroy it.  It says even their testimony did not agree (In Mark).  What?? What happened to the law.  After all this is the Sanhedrin right? The ones that have a law around the law around the law!  Deuteronomy 19:15

One witness is not enough to convict a man accused of any crime or offense he may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.  Deut 19:15…GO UNDERLINE THAT IN YOUR OLD TESTAMENT

Remember I didn’t make the schedule but I can’t help but to think that these chapters were taken 1 at a time because the Lord really wants us to know this.  One Chapter.  I urge you to dig, question, meditate, discern, and put it upon your hearts.  These are some of the last words our Lord and Savior has for us before the Crucifixion.

Do you ever sit and wonder what the Day of Judgment will be like?  I grew up thinking Peter was at a gate with a book and he checked a name off a list and said “Yup…c’mon in” and I got fitted for wings and a halo.  Well first, know that there IS a book with your name…. whether in it or not in it, but Peter is not holding it.  Guess who is??

Here is a vivid description of the day of Judgement.  Read it well so you won’t say “If I only knew….”

The 10 Bridesmaids.  I make no assumption that maybe you have heard this parable 100 times or this could be your first either way Get what Jesus is telling YOU.  The reading starts with “AT THAT TIME….at what time?  The doors of Heaven are opened to us we will not get a second chance to prepare ourselves.  You will either be going through the door or the bridegroom will say “Ummm I don’t know you”.  You will not have an opportunity to plead your case, run through your list of good deeds, profess faith….none of it. You are either the prepared bride or the unprepared bride.  We are given this time on this earth to prepare ourselves for that very day.  Are you prepared?

The Loaned Money.  read the segway…it says “Again..” Jesus is giving us more.  This is not necessarily about money although if that is what God has entrusted you with then…..  This is about what we do with what the Lord has given us for the purpose of His Kingdom.  So we know that upon our day of Grace, we were all given something to use towards the Kingdom.  Some like to evangelize,   some would NEVER feel that urge, that is because that is not the Lord has given you.  Some it is a compassion for the poor, some it is hospitality, some it is teaching, some it is prayer, some it is money or a good work ethic, WE ALL are given something that is to be used to MULTIPLY the result.  Do you bury yours?

The Final Judgement.  There is nothing to comment on.  Read it.  Feel what your Spirit is telling you , and for Heavens’ sake (no pun intended) DO IT!  But don’t for one minute think  it is the DEED here that gets you into Heaven.  The Desire to do it is EVIDENCE of you already having the ticket to Heaven.

Matt 24

Sp maybe you started reading and thought “Again? we are reading this again?”

Listen to me!  First know that Jesus is a day away from giving His life for us and this is His last and final message to the largest crowd of His ministry.  So here is the deal…it is IMPORTANT.  God chose to put it in 3 Gospels in full text for different audiences.  This is a message the Father wants us to KNOW!

Read today very closely ESPECIALLY if you read the Old Testament with us BECASUE this is the audience.  Remember Matthew’s audience at the time is the Jewish nation, so as you read underline or reference the OT Scripture Jesus is talking about.  Look in your margin of your Bible, you will see Joel, Daniel, Isiah, Ezekiel, and even Genesis being referenced.

Jesus is speaking in the very spot Zechariah was when Zechariah gave the same message regarding the End Times (Click here to read Zechariah 14) It’s the weekend, so I want you to dedicate a few extra minutes to this read.    (I cannot wait to re-read this OT next year…oh how different it will be EACH time I do it) How awesome is God.  So click here and read this chapter Zechariah 14

So one thing I have to say is that I am in AWE that this is such a big part of the Gospel.  I really through all this would be read about in Revelation.  I had no idea Jesus would spend His last and greatest day of Ministry warning us of the End Day.

Matt 22; Mark 12

ok, let’s get our scenario.

  • About a month ago a man named Lazarus was raised from the dead.  A huge moment.  The crowd this created for Jesus grew exponentially.  At that point, Caiaphas said “enough! he must die”, and Jesus knew it was not his time fled the city and crossed the border into Ephraim (where the Jews had no jurisdiction).
  • SO now Jesus is back in town and the crowds are huge, why?  because the Passover is in a few days and most of the Jews would travel 3 times a year to the Temple to make a sacrifice.  Since we read the Old Testament,  we know from the Scriptures that the Savior is the “Lamb of God who takes away the Sins of the World” repeated by the last prophet John the Baptist. The LAMB, the spotless, unblemished perfect sacrifice on the Passover.

So today we have 3 very powerful Political Parties that normally would be squawking at each other are now on the same team…the team against Jesus.  The highest of the high is probably standing there to ask Jesus questions they have concocted to trap Him into just one small wrong answer (enough to arrest Him), and when I say wrong it could have been against Roman Law (who had the rights to punish in all the Palestine area but since he was now in Judea, Jerusalem specifically,  the San Hedrin (the Jewish COuncil) could also arrest him now.  SO the questions they ask are double whammies!  Most of them if He answers Yes he breaks one law and if He answers No he breaks another…but It IS NOT HIS TIME.  Jesus will say when He will lay His life down…we never took it.

So the first parable we read is about the evil farmers.  During the week,  we crossed out the parable names and inserted the intended names. Did anything stand out? Well for me it did!  The landowner (God) rented the Land.  Reality check!  Nothing on this earth including the earth is ours.  He has given us ALL this and one day the lease agreement will be up and He will take it ALL back, including this earth.

We have spent a lot of time learning so that these scriptures would take a whole new meaning.  Many of you jumped on at the New Testament so please feel comfortable asking questions!  Picture the scene when the Leaders start asking their questions:  The Pharisees and the Herodian. (Pharisees are a religious based political Party, Herodians are a political party that are full supporters of the Roman Government rules by the Herod Dynasty).  SO they start the ”trapping” and fail.  SO here comes the big ole Sadducee, I am sure extremely pompous in his presence, questions Jesus about the resurrection.  Why??  Cmon, I know you know this…the Sadducees are a group of religious leaders that ONLY believe the WOrd of God was written in the first 5 books of the Bible.  RIght?  WHo wrote the first 5 books?  MOSES.  So unless Moses said it…it ain’t true in their eyes!  And according to the Sadducees, Moses never mentioned the Resurrection! So they jump in with their ‘trapping’ questions from Laws that were brough to the Jews back in Deuteronomy 25.  HOw does Jesus answer? He knows his audience (always does…look how differently he spoke to the woman at the well vs. Nicodemus), anyway, he answered them from Scripture from Exodus, in their language!

SO now the Sadducees failed…so the Pharisees jumped back in to talk about the commandments and David’s line….are you kidding me!  What a spectacle it must have been to watch!  Oh the humanity of it all!  It’s like watching a Darwinist explain the beginning of time, keep asking…eventually they get to a point of stuttering!

And today we end with ALL these powerful, educated, rich people who own and read the scriptures (look around your church) who have no faith! And here comes a woman, old, frail, poor, uneducated, who has enough faith to give all she has to the Lord!  Man o man! what a read

The Vineyard Workers. The Kingdom of Heaven is like….   Very interesting explanation on Salvation.  I truly think it will pull some Pride issues out of our heart.  Let me see if I can rephrase it?  So there you were, age 7 when you really believed.   All your life you have gone to church (well you know, except for that period of time in your life around college ),  you have always tried to be good, serve when you were’t  too busy, you gave leftover stuff to the Goodwill or a Shelter Cause.  For 65 years you were a “good” Christian.  Then there is this girl who NEVER went to church, never gave a dime, always lived a lifestyle not according to the any Christian Value, and the year she died, on her death-bed she believed…and we both get the same reward…Heaven.  Well that is just not fair!  Let me twist it now.

Do you have more than one child?  They are so different aren’t they.  such different personalities towards the Lord.   If a boat tipped over and you thought  you could only save one of them…who would you grab?  Seriously? Would you save only one? Heck no!  We love our children soooo much that we would do ANYTHING to get both our kids in the boat at the same time, regardless of who talked back to you over breakfast!  Right.  That is how much God loved EACH one of His children.  It DOES not matter the tantrum they caused…if He gets an opportunity to save them from drowning..He will take them up into the boat to safety.

Jesus heals the 2 blind beggars.  By far one of my favorite little stories in the Bible.  So 2 blind men were able to say 2 important things here WHILE many who were educated in the scriptures, possibly wealthy and who could SEE,  could not say it:

  1. You are the Son of David.  (They are acknowledging that Jesus is the Messiah, from David’s line)
  2. Have Mercy on us.  Mercy..UNDESERVED forgiveneess, treatment, love…

I Once was blind but now I see…Amzing Grace.  That is what Grace is:  Acknowledging the SOn of David as our Messiah AND HE HAS MERCY ON US.  Grace.  underserved.

Matthew 21. HUGE READ.  Many of you have recognized that we are at Palm Sunday, the Sunday before the Crucifixion.  Take a minute to flip left to Zechariah 9:9 (A MUST Read paragraph).  This was written 500 years prior to this through the  Prophet Zechariah addressing the Jews in Jerusalem that returned to Jerusalem after Cyrus released them from captivity.  Riding in on a donkey with her colt was a message to the people that He is King and to be exalted, but more importantly He was fulfilling the Scriptures.  This is also the first time Jesus is allowing himself to be treated as Messianic Royalty, up till now he was a servant.  He shows His authority at the Temple again.  He did this to start His ministry 3 years ago too.  The temple courts were completely corrupt, for example poor people would bring their unblemished animal or dove to be sacrificed to the Lord and people at the temple would say “Ummm nope, I see a defect! (Lie), buy one of these, these are perfect sacrifices” .  Also people coming to give their tithe to the offering box, men would say “Uhh nope, you must buy a special token…Here I will sell it to you”.  Then the blind and the lame came to temple (Oh Lordy) That surely will set off the Priests and Pharisees! (totally not allowed).

The parable of the 2 sons.  DO you get it?  Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees about the Pharisees.  They are the Second son.  “I will…but never did”

The parable fo the Evil Farmer:  You will love this!  Get your pen and cross off the following and then re-read it.

Landowner: God

The Vineyard: Israel

The tenants: Jewish Leaders

The landowner Servants: the priests and prophets

The Son: JESUS!

The OTHER tenants: The Gentiles

Now re-read it!

Don’t just read Matthew and skip Mark. Mark has some incredible Scriptures in it.

I am going got talk about the commandments today,  When the man came to him and asked “How do you get to Heaven” Jesus answered with what the man thought would be the answer  “Follow the commandments”.  And the man responded…’Yup, I do” Then Jesus says “Really?? Well the last commandment says do not Covet your stuff or there is another about idols, So why don’t you sell it all and follow me”.  The man said “OUCH, that hurt”.

See the point of the story is that none of us can follow the commandments.  It is easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than for us to get ourselves into Heaven.  What Jesus is saying is “It’s IMPOSSIBLE”.  It is Hard for the Rich to Enter the Kingdom of Heaven…think about that Phrase!  Now look at the 10 commandments.  How many have we broken? Golly…probably almost all of them!’

Shall have no other gods before me: Ummm make a list of 10 really important things in your life that if you closed your eyes and it disappeared you would freak out. (401K, bank account, house, car, TV,  clothes, job,) what do you walk around thinking about more than the Lord?  What do you WORRY about the most?

You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them.  Well this is a huge range many of fall into…some religions have actually created a false worship system inside the actual church bowing to priests or statues and others have worshipped people.  Anyone we emulate we put up as a god.  Someone on TV, musician, actor, neighbor…who are we bowing down to be more like other than Jesus?

Shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.  Maybe you were brought up in a way that you have never SLIPPED on this one (doubt it).  But a person in your life that does misuse the name…do you kindly correct them or do you not say anything?

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.  Did you get that last part?? Keeping it Holy.  Holy means SET APART.  Is one day of your week set apart for the Lord?  I am not talking about attending Church although I hold that pretty high on my Holy Day, I am talking about getting in His Word, Doing the Work of the Lord.  Good Golly I attend a church of 6000 and I have trouble getting 20 people to give an hour a year to service…UmmmmI think Christians might be falling short on the Sabbath.  It is a day of Rest IN HIM, not a day of Rest with potatoes Chips.

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.  I looked this one up in Hebrew.  Honor is a Verb, an action.  It means Heavy too.  What intentional emotion do you portray to you mother and father.  By the way, the verb “roll your eyes” does not count.  LOL.

You shall not murder.  Ummm pay attention to the new Health Care Reform Agenda.  Do you support or turn your other cheek to abortion?

You shall not commit adultery.   We all read it…Anyone who looks at another in a desirable way has already committed adultery.   Uhhh I am 39, I think that may have happened once or twice.

You shall not steal.  Have you EVER taken anything that did not belong to you.  From a store, from the Office, from a friend, from God”?

You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.  Have you ever said something that if the person was standing next to you, you would not have said?  It’s called Gossip.

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. What? Your not a jealous person? REALLY.  You never looked and thought…I wish I had that.  That wardrobe, that house, that boat, that butt, those kids (lol), that decorating money, that talent.  Covet means “Chamad” on Hebrew, meaning Desire.  I call it window shopping!

My point is not to make you feel horrible that you just scored maybe a 2 out of 10, my point is that God knows the one that we fail.  And we ALL have failed one.  In this story the man’s money was his idol.   We are only made righteous through the Son Jesus. (unless your camel fits through the eye of the needle) But go back to the Questions and Answer:

The Man asked:  “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Jesus Answered:  “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

Matt 12:22-50; Luk2 11

Let me start by saying, this is meat and potatoes.  This is not easy to break down.  I sat with a group of ladies a few weeks ago on this part of Matthew and it took 90 minutes just to discuss a few paragraphs, so my point is ASK QUESTIONS…I do.  Jesus talks about how it  is He who takes demons out and then rolls right into the:

The Unpardonable Sin. Matthew 12:30-32

“He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

Think on that.  If you say there is no such thing as the Holy Spirit, that is an unforgiving sin. Why is that unpardonable??  Why is that the ONLY Sin God will not forgive?  Because it takes Jesus off the Cross.   Jesus was in all his humanity the Son of God, but the resurrection was for us to have the Holy Spirit.  When we get to Pentecost I want you to be really fired up, right now we are reading the foreshadow of that to come.  The bi-product of Salvation IS the Holy Spirit.

LUKE.  Man I really wish we were a small group to talk about all this.  PALEEZE take some time to dig into words or scriptures.  Some were too familiar to me (not a goof thing) and others I was like “what in the world is Jesus talking about??  The Lords Prayer: Luke has a simpler model than Matthew but breaks the elements down!  SOOOO many people say “I don’t know how to pray” or “I am not good at it”.  I won’t get into all that Jesus just loves hearing from us, and having some one on one with us, but for those type A that need a standard, Jesus gave us a model to follow

  • Father, Hallowed (Hallowed is an adjective, sanctified, concentrated, HOLY, set apart)  It is a request…”Lord make your name Holy!”
  • your kingdom come, His plan will happen from beginning to end, the Messiah is a huge part of that plan (and so are we).
  • Give us our daily bread (to survive, our NEEDS) not desires
  • Forgive us (WHY!!!) because we have forgiven those who have sinned AGAINST US.  Ouch!
  • Leads us not into temptation (not sin, the step BEFORE IT…think on that)  Whatever your sin is, there is ALWAYS a step before it that is avoidable, pray that HE is WITH US to avoid that.

I am gonna skip some parts but comment if you got stuck on them.  Being brought up Catholic I immediately noted that God puts in the Scriptures how He knew people would consider Mary “blessed” and exalted and Jesus addresses this in verse 27 and 28 when He says “Blessed rather are those who hear the Word and obey it”.  Wow.

Jonah and Solomon.  Two people from the Old Testament that we need to look at or re-read.  Each time I read Jonah the Lord gives me a whole other layer to peel off!  Last time I read it I realized it has nothing to do with a Fish, it had all to do with God and his character of forgiveness not just for the Jews but for the worst sinners of Assyria.  (ugly place), and how we should want ALL people to join us in Heaven.  Now through Luke I see it as a story of Salvation.  Just as Jonah was taken for 3 days,  so is Jesus,  and Forgiveness came to all those who repented and acknowledged God as the only Lord!  And Solomon, a man who was asked “I will give you ONE wish…” by the Lord and he responded with the word WISDOM. (would you?) and the most pagan people in their time (Queen of the South is Sheba)  came to hear the Words of God (and yet most of us don’t make proper time to sit on a comfortable couch and hear it from a Bible).

Anyway, There was SOOOO much more to this read.  Actually the parts that touched me were not any of the above…some even made me research because I was seriously scratching my head!   Dig today…because some of this is the pivot in our getting closer to understanding what the Lord wants from us.
